One of the things we consider most vital here at Polaron (on top of the transparent relationships we have with our clients) is our relationships with suppliers. We strive to ensure that we’re giving our family the best possible systems for their homes, so choosing the equipment we install isn’t something we take lightly.
When it comes to the panels we install on homes across the nation, we work with Canadian Solar — and specifically, we trust their KU modules. Why? Well, there are three primary reasons: higher kilowatt peak power, more energy output, and better shading tolerance.
What makes these panels better than standard cell modules (such as those from companies like LG, for example)?
The main differences between KU modules and standard modules are dual cells and dual-module design. Dual cells are half the width of standard cells, with half the width generating half the current.
That means the modules operate like two modules in one. This gives the modules better shading tolerance than standard PV modules in portrait orientation.
When the bottom portion of standard modules gets shady, the entire module stops producing. With KU modules, only the bottom half of the module stops producing when the bottom is shaded. This allows you to optimize your system design. Likewise, they are a higher power, providing 10-15W more than competitors, which is a big deal.
Not to mention, Ku modules provide a higher yield, working at a lower nominal module operating temperature and a better temperature coefficient. This is important, as the hotter panels get, the less they produce. Put in perspective, panels will lose half of one percent of its power for every degree the temperature rises.
By remaining cooler than standard, single-celled panels, Ku panels offer higher reliability, improving failure redundancy and reducing hotspots significantly, by roughly 30°C. Why is that important?
Hot spots are high-temperature areas that affect only one solar panel zone, resulting in a localized decrease of panel efficiency. In short, lower output power and accelerated material degradation in the affected area.
This means your panels last longer, and the reduced temperature helps decrease possible risks to your home — making them dramatically safer.
So to recap, we prefer Canadian Solar’s Ku Module because of these dual cell panels:
Still generate more power, even when partially shaded
Stay cooler, increasing efficiency and lowering hot spot risks
Last longer, as reduced hotspots lower the risk of degradation and reduce system failure
We would never recommend a product that we wouldn’t recommend to our immediate families. With almost twenty years in the industry, Canadian Solar is doing great things, and we’re happy to pass their innovation along to you, our clients.
