A huge solar opportunity for Southwestern Ontario Greenhouses is open through the Agriculture SaveOnEnergy Program. Incentives are being offered by IESO to aid the rapid growth of Ontario’s agriculture sector and promote energy independence for qualified greenhouses. Through the program you can receive incentives for both solar and battery storage systems.
IESO is specifically encouraging businesses and greenhouses to install a distributed energy resources (DERs) system that enables you to exclusively use the energy that your solar system generates to power your greenhouse. The result is a win-win situation for both your greenhouse and the grid—helping you save money on electricity and reducing the growing demand on the electricity grid.
Your system therefore cannot send any energy back to the grid, Everything your panels produce will either be used directly by you or can be stored for later use with the inclusion of a battery.
Greenhouses are eligible to receive:
- PV: $1,435/kW (min of 50 kW or up to 50% of the project costs, whichever is less)
- Battery storage: $260/kWh (min capacity of 500kWh or up to 50% of costs, whichever is less)
The main criteria to be qualify for the incentives are:
- The minimum size of the solar PV system must be at least 50 kW
- The minimum battery storage capacity 500 kWh
- The Green houses must be located in Southwestern Ontario under these specified postal codes
- The solar panels have to be mounted on a new or existing rooftop
- The system must be “Behind-The-Mater” and cannot send power back to the grid or be under a Net Metering agreement with your LDC
