Ontario announced their Long-Term 2 Request for Proposals (RFP) procurement plan focused on the development of large energy generation projects and capacity solutions.
Last year IESO completed framework for long-term procurement 1, involving energy projects set to launch between 2026-2028. Their release primarily highlighted the addition of 882 MW in capacity systems, including battery storage systems to keep up with growing peak demand in the province.
While Long-Term 2 RFP continues to seek advancement for increased storage capacity, procurements of large-scale energy systems is also set to be a top priority. Anyone who wishes to submit a proposal must register by September 16, 2025, with selected projects to be announced by April 14, 2026.
What Long-Term LT2 Means For Solar Energy
IESO is targeting 3 TWH of energy generation procurements and 600MW of additional capacity with the first window of Long-Term RFP. The announcement marks a great opportunity for renewable energy systems to make big strides in Ontario’s growing energy landscape.
Solar and wind energy will be key players, representing some of the most affordable and viable projects to help the province keep up with increasing demand. Renewable energy offers vast power potential that can be built quickly and at a lower cost compared to traditional energy sources.
Ontario is forecasted to need a 75% increase in electricity by 2050, which is why Long-Term 2 RFP is seen as such a crucial and necessary step to sustainably prepare.
