The energy landscape in Atlantic Canada is undergoing a historic transformation as Nova Scotia commercial solar adoption reached new heights in 2025. According to recent data from Nova Scotia Power, the commercial-scale sector saw a staggering 82% increase in photovoltaic (PV) generation capacity over the past year. This surge signals a definitive shift in how local businesses, municipalities, and First Nations communities approach energy independence and sustainability.
A Banner Year for Business Solar
The Commercial and Industrial (C&I) segment, which includes a diverse range of enterprises from small local shops to large-scale municipal operations, added 99 new installations in 2025 alone. This represents a 41% increase in the total number of systems compared to the end of 2024, bringing the provincial total to at least 342 commercial installations.
Industry experts suggest the actual numbers may be even higher, as many Nova Scotia commercial solar systems operate behind-the-meter or are not currently connected to the provincial grid, meaning the total clean energy output is likely underestimated.
Drivers of the boom in Nova Scotia’s Commercial Solar Capacity
Two primary factors have catalyzed this rapid expansion.
- Legislative Changes & Net-Metering: Recent updates to provincial net-metering rules have been a game-changer. Businesses are now permitted to install systems up to ten times larger than previously allowed. With the program now supporting projects up to 1 MW—provided the generation aligns with on-site consumption—companies have the scale necessary to make significant dents in their operating costs.
- Federal Tax Incentives: The Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit, introduced by the federal government, offers a credit of up to 30% on capital costs for solar equipment. When combined with the long-term savings on electricity bills, the return on investment (ROI) for Nova Scotia commercial solar has never been more attractive.
Closing the Gap
While the residential sector still leads the province with approximately 110 MW of installed capacity, the 2025 commercial growth spurt indicates that the business community is catching up fast. With energy consultant David Brushett noting that improved project economics are driving this trend, 2026 is expected to see even more Nova Scotian companies making the switch to renewable energy.
As the province continues its march toward a greener grid, Nova Scotia commercial solar stands out as a pillar of economic and environmental resilience.
