The Government of Prince Edward Island has released its new PEI Energy Strategy, a 10-year roadmap (2026–2035) that charts the province’s course toward a more sustainable, affordable, and secure energy future — and positions PEI to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
The province achieved major goals from the 2016/2017 energy plan, such as reducing renewable energy cost while improving accessibility. Building on their previous energy plan, the updated strategy focuses on increasing renewable energy generation, modernizing the electricity grid, and reducing reliance on imported power and fossil fuels. PEI currently imports about 85% of its electricity and uses refined petroleum products for the majority of its energy needs.
“Our energy future must be clean, affordable, and locally controlled,” said Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Action Steven Myers. “This strategy sets out how we will expand renewable generation, improve efficiency, and build a resilient energy system that works for Islanders.”
Key Clean-Energy Priorities in PEI’s Energy Strategy
- Expand On-Island Renewable Generation:
Increase local wind, solar, and biomass power production to reduce dependence on imported electricity and enhance energy security. - Develop Energy Storage Systems:
Invest in battery and other long-duration storage to balance renewable generation and ensure reliability. - Modernize the Electric Grid:
Upgrade transmission and distribution systems to integrate more renewables, support electrification, and improve system resilience. - Support Electrification:
Promote electric heating and transportation to replace fossil fuels, paired with renewable power sources. - Boost Energy Efficiency:
Expand building retrofits and conservation programs to lower overall energy demand and household costs. - Advance Regulatory and Policy Reform:
Streamline energy planning, enhance consumer protections, and enable community-based renewable projects. - Ensure Affordability and Equity:
Develop initiatives to protect low-income households and involve communities, including Indigenous groups, in clean-energy development.
By expanding renewable generation and storage, the province aims to create a cleaner, more reliable energy system that keeps costs stable for consumers while meeting its 2040 net-zero target. Implementation details — including specific projects, funding, and timelines — are expected in a forthcoming action plan.
