British Columbia has launched its 2025 call for power, a major step in expanding the province’s supply of clean electricity while supporting jobs, communities, and economic development. Through BC Hydro, the province aims to secure up to 5,000 gigawatt-hours annually of new clean or renewable electricity, enough to power 500,000 homes.
This builds on the 2024 call for power, which delivered ten renewable projects co-owned by First Nations. Those projects brought up to $6 billion in private investment, including $3 billion in First Nations’ equity, and created about 2,000 construction jobs annually. Notably, they provided clean electricity at costs 40 percent lower than comparable 2010 procurements (inflation-adjusted).
Premier David Eby said, “B.C. will be the economic engine of Canada’s new economy, and that engine will be powered by abundant clean electricity.” He noted that the initiative ensures reliable energy for growing communities, helps keep living affordable, and strengthens resilience across the province.
Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix added, “This is our moment to build the clean-energy future British Columbians deserve,” highlighting the province’s commitment to expanding clean electricity generation, growing the grid, and advancing Indigenous leadership.
To qualify, projects must produce clean electricity or renewable power with at least 40 megawatts capacity, be operational by October 1, 2033, and have a minimum of 25 percent First Nations equity. BC Hydro expects to finalize agreements by early 2026.
The 2025 call for power is central to the Clean Power Action Plan, which includes biannual solicitations, stronger grid infrastructure, and $36 billion in system investments over the next decade. Together, these steps ensure that clean electricity remains the foundation for B.C.’s sustainable growth and economic opportunity. Are you ready to take the next step?
