The government of Ontario just announced massive funding of $10.9 billion for energy efficient programs. One major development is the new Home Renovations Savings Program for homeowners, covering up to 30% of total project costs for energy efficient upgrades.
The program includes a selection of upgrade options, including solar and battery installations. Ontario homeowners are eligible for up to $5000 for solar and $5000 for batteries, bringing the total incentive up to $10,000.
Applications will officially open January 28th, 2025 however homeowners can sign up now on SaveOnEnergy’s website to receive email updates about the incentive.
The program’s launch will aid millions of Canadians and save over $20 billion dollars on energy infrastructure costs over the next decade.
Another major component of the new rebate is its emphasis on behind the meter distributed energy systems. This means incentives cannot be paired with net metering systems that export excess energy to the grid in exchange for credits.
How Behind The Meter Energy Systems Can Help You Save More Money
A Behind the meter system puts all the power into the homeowner’s hands, allowing for all solar PV generation to be used directly on site. Unlike net metering, customers will NOT receive credits for energy that is sent to the grid.
The benefit comes from the extra flexibility that batteries offer to a solar system. Homeowners can easily avoid peak rates by setting the battery up to store energy during off-peak hours and discharge during peak hours. Additional savings will also accumulate through lower distribution costs, promising significant long-term savings by avoiding increasing fees.
Another big advantage is having a battery back-up during outages. Batteries offer security, ensuring essential appliances are powered when you need them the most. You get to be in full control of how and when your solar energy is used for your home.
The Home Renovations Savings Program is a huge game changer for solar in Ontario. Solar systems and batteries have never been more accessible, bringing in a new wave of renewable energy generation that helps homeowners save while reducing the growing demand on Ontario’s grid.
